Common problems need common solutions! Commission proposes to Member States to jointly address major societal challenges


The Communication sets out an ambitious new approach for making better use of Europe's limited public R&D funds through enhanced cooperation. The new initiative it proposes – namely Joint Programming – marks a change in European research cooperation. By enhancing cooperation among those that develop and manage research programmes, it aims to increase the efficiency and impact of national public research funding in strategic areas.

Careers and mobility, international co-operation, research infrastructures, joint programming and knowledge sharing are today's main concerns of European research actors, according to a report just published by the European Commission. The report draws on over 1000 responses to a public consultation on the Green Paper "The European Research Area: New Perspectives" published in April 2007. The responses show strong overall support to further consolidate the European Research Area through new and more ambitious actions at all levels in the EU – regional, national and transnational.

European Commission nominates high-level advisory group on research and science (Apr 16, 2008)

The European Commission announced today the names of 22 personalities who will make up the European Research Area Board (ERAB). These persons come from the fields of science, academia and business and will provide independent and authoritative advice to the European Commission on European research and science policy, whose objective is to realise a European Research Area.

Public consultation on a Recommendation on a Code of Conduct for Responsible Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies Research (Sep 10, 2007)

On 18 July 2007, the European Commission announced a public consultation on a Recommendation on a Code of Conduct for Responsible Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies Research. The consultation will provide input for a Recommendation on governance of this emerging area of science, which the Commission will put forward later this year. Consultation on ERA (Aug 13, 2007)

With the Green Paper on the European Research Area (ERA), the European Commission launches a broad institutional and public debate on what should be done to create a unified and attractive European Research Area, which would fulfil the needs and expectations of the scientific community, business and citizens.

The public consultation was launched on 1 May 2007 and will be open until
31 August 2007.

EU - Improving quality and productivity at work: Community strategy 2007-12 on OSH (Mar 14, 2007)

The new five-year strategy for health and safety at work has been adopted by the Commission. It sets out a series of actions at European and national levels in different areas. One of the main priorities is better identifying and assessing potential new risks through more research and exchange of knowledge. It also emphasises that more coordination between national research programmes is necessary.
